The simple past for regular verbs is usually formed by adding "ed"

started decided wanted insisted permitted finished

If the infinitive ends in e, just add d:

loved moved saved agreed arrived lived danced

If the infinitive ends in a short stressed vowel followed by a consonant, double the vowel and add ed:

stop -> stopped beg -> begged

If the infinitive ends in a consonant followed by a y, change the y to i and add ed to form the simple past:

cry -> cried apply -> applied carry -> carried

Infinitives that end in a vowel followed by y just add ed to form the simple past:

enjoyed stayed
