The simple past for regular verbs is usually formed by adding "ed"
| started | decided | wanted | insisted | permitted | finished |
If the infinitive ends in e, just add d:
| loved | moved | saved | agreed | arrived | lived | danced |
If the infinitive ends in a short stressed vowel followed by a consonant, double the vowel and add ed:
| stop -> stopped | beg -> begged |
If the infinitive ends in a consonant followed by a y, change the y to i and add ed to form the simple past:
| cry -> cried | apply -> applied | carry -> carried |
Infinitives that end in a vowel followed by y just add ed to form the simple past:
| enjoyed | stayed |
